About MarkerHistory.com

Markerhistory.com is a Fredericksburg-based web site founded “to make Virginia historical highway markers conveniently accessible and relevant to a wider audience.”

The web site covers the Commonwealth’s official 2,578 markers as of July, 2011 and features a full-color photograph of each marker, with complete text, and both road map directions and GPS location.

The Civil War series-one of 15 categories- is set chronologically and by campaign covering battle-related events most of which did not take place at NPS-maintained sites. A featured segment is Grant’s Overland Campaign, including the Battle of the Wilderness.

Started in 1927, the Commonwealth’s historical marker program is the oldest such program in the nation and is administered through the Department of Historic Resources. Click Virginia Highway Markers
